Ironically, I knew a headache was coming on as we left Keswick. We wanted to see two places in the South Lake District: Wordsworth's and Beatrix Potter's. I hoped the pain would go but by the time we got to the Wordsworth Museum, there were (eh-hem) no "words worth" repeating for how I felt... let's just say, it was a "biggy." So we didn't do the museum-- just walked the lovely grounds.
As we left, I gave myself a shot and we headed for Hawkshead, Peter Rabbit's burrow! Oh dear-- wouldn't you know it, the most gorgeous, narrow, winding, tree-covered, brick-walled streets-- almost lost my English breakfast! So we pulled over with hopes of a quick recovery. (Love those shots, but they do have to run their nauseating course!)
Almost as quickly as you can say "Jeremiah Puddleduck," I was better and we enjoyed the tiny Hawkshead Village (didn't bother with her farm or museum). We bought a loaf of French bread, some Edam Cheese and goodies and enjoyed lunch on a bench. Weird that it was Sunday! But we did do church-- we found a tiny Methodist Church there with about 5 pews on each side, and a sign on the old organ that said, "We welcome guests to play; please just turn off the electricity." I wish I knew more about that old organ (I of course played around a bit-- Ken will probably post the vid) and I bought a "Hawkshead Methodist Church" drink coaster as a remembrance. Fun!
We stopped a few times as we made our way south and then west to the coast! It's so wonderful to watch the landscape change-- driving into Conwy, Wales reminded me just a bit of south Orange County-- tract homes on the hill overlooking the coast (and the highway)-- but of course, there's no fantastic castle or buildings from the 13th century in the OC! It's kind of nice it's such a small little town. We found our way no problem to the "Old Corner House B&B." It's just a few houses from one of the main gates of this walled city fortified by Edward 1, 1283! Is this town ever beautiful! The incredible weather is helping us to enjoy this first of two nights here.
We first walked right to the harbor and came upon a little bluegrass band-- apparently their annual festival is just ending tonight. Glad we got to hear a little bit.
Then we found St. Mary's Church-- hopefully we can go in tomorrow. We found the "We Are Seven" place which marks the grave of two children Wordsworth wrote about in his famous poem of that name.
We walked around the city, on the walls a bit, and back to the harbor (the "Quay")-- perfect night-- we took a ton of pix. Here are a few! It will be fun to explore more tomorrow!
We heard on the news about the plane crash in San Francisco and the Quebec train explosion ... terrible! But just as we arrived had arrived to our room this evening, the Brit Andy Murray won Wimbledon. Now that's jolly good news! Cheers!
